Has a design moment ever followed you? Instagram, design magazines, TV. For me, it has been black metal grids. On windows, on mirrors, on furniture. I wanted in on this style but the price was just too steep. How beautiful is this loft wall by The Honest Home!

Enter electrical tape. Angela Rose has been using it for years for window grids. Most recently, she created these Harry Potter Windows. So cool right?!

I had the perfect spot for this hack. These mirrored slider doors are in my office and just scream 2008. Replacement doors are crazy expensive so I’ve been wanting to DIY for a while.

This project took me in all about 4 hours or a weeks worth of zoom calls. All I used was:

  • 8 rolls of 3m electrical tape
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Ladder

Firstly, I measured where I wanted the grids to go. My first try I messed up and only did 6 squares. It looked fine but when using as an actual mirror, a black line went straight across my face. Whoops! The second time around I switched to an 8 grid.

Next, I learned that going vertical first left the cleanest look. I didn’t use a level but marked on both sides the height and then just covered with the tape.

Another tip is to not pull the tape. It will stretch but then you won’t get an even straight line. Just keep taping with a loose pull.

Using basic 3/4 inch tape, I liked the double look. So for this project, my grid lines are 1- 1 1/2 inch wide. If you can find wider tape, it will make for less double work.

I also decided to wrap the sides so it looked more like thick black metal. If you look close of course you can see the tape but I think it looks great!

I absolutely love how this cheap hack turned out! Would you try electrical tape on your mirrors? Tag me on Instagram if you do!

Best, Melissa and Girls
